Face Brick: An Excellent Choice for an Energy Efficient Home!

Many builders are focusing on building more energy efficient homes. This makes sense as the current housing market demands both greater energy savings in terms of costs and for the good of the environment.  While there are many ways to ensure energy efficiency, one of the best is using a material that humans have built with for centuries: face bricks.

Face bricks are the outside covering of bricks that are visible on the surface of the home.  These are defined a bit differently than other bricks that might not be visible inside a home (in the foundation or cellar walls for example), but they are essentially the same product.  Face bricks just tend to be more aesthetically uniform and pleasing.

In the past, people built with just bricks because they were easy to manufacture out of clay and other natural materials and because they made warm, sturdy homes.  In the twenty-first century, many building innovations also help keeps homes sturdy and regulate temperature (like insulation, for example), but covering a home in face brick is still a great idea! Not only are facebricks more environmentally friendly than some other building materials, but also a home covered in brick is always more energy efficient because it will be warmer in the winter and keep cool air in better during the summer.  It will also with stand weather conditions (severe  rains, hurricanes, heavy snows) better than other homes.

For a home that looks lovely, will save you money on your electric and heating bills, and will help the environment, choose face brick for all your outside walls, window accents, and other visible surfaces!

Concrete Block: Imagine the Possibilities!

Concrete blocks are helpful in so many projects. While they are often used as the foundations of projects like playhouses, garden sheds, and other heavy duty applications, they can also be used to beautify your home and add to its curb appeal. In order to do this, it is important to consider the many forms and colors that concrete blocks come in.

You can buy concrete blocks in standard gray, cinder block form; but, you can also find them in whites, reds, blue shades, and other colors. The shape of concrete blocks also varies from round, half-moon, oval, square, and many other shapes. In terms of texture, there is also a great deal of variety here.

With all that variability in mind, it is important to have a clear vision of your project before you visit a masonry materials store.  Will you be building a large retaining wall? Are you hoping to just edge flowered beds? Would you like to build a concrete block patio? Then, consider the colors, designs, and shape of this project.  Make a list of these features and take this with you when you shop.  There are thousands of possibilities with concrete blocks— so, take a look around your home and yard and see how it can help you make your space a bit more beautiful!

Make a Stunning Front Yard with Curb Appeal with Retaining Walls

Although many people think of retaining walls as purely functional items, these walls can be beautiful additions to a well-landscaped front yard.  In the front yard, what really matters is curb appeal and a catchy landscaping design.  A retaining wall (or several walls) can help terrace a yard in order to create just these things.  For example, even in a small front yard, using large retaining walls to divide the yard in half and then at different heights makes for a visually interesting and pleasing arrangement. With the smart use of retaining walls, you can create space for hanging gardens, steps, water features, and terraces.  Within these terraces, many homeowners also plant small trees and shrubs, flower beds, and include a bench or other sitting area.

While you can build retaining walls and landscape behind them yourself, it is important to talk to professionals before beginning any project like this.  Depending on what sorts of masonry materials you choose and the scope of your project, you may need to bring in a small bulldozer and some extra hands to help build the actual wall. It is also crucial to build the wall in such a way that water will not leak behind it.  Too much water behind a wall will destroy it and cause expensive landscape repair and damage. So, before you build, visit your local masonry materials store. While you are there you will be able to shop their many different types of stone and concrete blocks that will help you make the retainingwalls that are perfect for your front yard!
